Rare untreated Burmese sapphire

Deep blue and as rare as the so-called blue moon – a second full moon within one month: the top lot of the Jewellery auction on 26 November is not only astounding for its clarity and intensity of hue; an untreated sapphire of this size and quality is a rare phenomenon on the market.

Sapphires, which, like rubies, consist of corundum and are the second hardest gemstones after diamonds, have always been much sought-after as objects of desire. They adorned the insignia of countless rulers of the Orient. The most famous gems of their kind in Europe are probably the St Edward’s Sapphire and the Stuart Sapphire, both belonging to the British Crown Jewels. Whatever hand the elegant, step-cut Burmese sapphire ring finally embellishes, it is certain to dazzle as a resplendent accessory.
