Collecting art
Outstanding works of art from the collection of Gianni Colombo, a prominent Italian artist and representative of kinetic art, will be auctioned at Dorotheum on the 16th and 17th of May.
Gianni Colombo: The Artist
Gianni Colombo (1937-1993) tried to show the physical, bodily and tactile dimensions of consciousness by acting on a playful, easy and light level.
Art Collects Artists
Many artists and artist groups came into contact in the 1950s and 60s, exchanging experiences and inspiring each other.
Together with Giovanni Anceschi, Davide Boriani and Gabriele Devecchi, Colombo created the artist group Gruppo T. He worked closely with Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani and was co-founder of the international artist movement Nouvelle Tendance. In 1977, along with Giulio Turcato, Carla Accardi, Concetto Pozzati, Emilio Tadini, Carmelo Cappello and Mimmo Rotella, he established a group called Cooperarte, which organized exhibitions throughout Italy.

The artists experimented with new forms of balance to alter the viewer’s sensations, creating synaesthetic spaces and areas of interaction between the various senses. Their desire was to break the perceptual passivity of the environments of both galleries and museums, as well as houses and palaces, to demonstrate that these places were lethargic.

Here are some interesting examples from this era (lots 213-217), made even more fascinating due to their common origin from the collection of Gianni Colombo. A reminder of the brilliance of the relationships that linked these artists and their research, which had so much in common despite their geographical distances.
