World Women’s Day: the art of equality

World Women's Day (Weltfrauentag)

World Women’s Day, or International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1910. It has fallen on March 8 since 1921. Happily, some countries observe it as a legal holiday. In our opinion, World Women’s Day is an important occasion and deserves to be celebrated – preferably through art!

World Women’s Day: the art of women’s equality

Why celebrate World Women’s Day through art? For starters, gaining the independence and autonomy to pursue art was itself an art and a struggle for women. Above and beyond that, countless women have proved themselves to be incredible artists.

Great women artists: hall of fame

This World Women’s Day and every day, Dorotheum invites you to take a journey through the art history of women and discover the works of great female artists!

With that in mind, browse Dorotheum’s archive of artists and find your favourite paintings by female artists!
