ZERO: Bright Spots

Works by ZERO artists are dominated by natural elements such as light, air, water and fire, and by the aesthetic of the space age. The Düsseldorf group surrounding Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günther Uecker was con-sciously leaving World War II behind in order to start afresh, unburdened by the past.

Heinz Mack said: “ZERO is not a movement, it is an attitude.” His monumental reliefs are made of aluminium and plexiglass panes. Under the influence of different lighting and reflections, and depending on the observer’s position, they can morph from visual object into immaterial sculpture, and vice versa.
